Abstract

A bleached or decolourized grease is obtained from wool grease by dissolving it in a non-polar solvent, such as benzine, contacting with at least 50 per cent of its weight of a bleaching agent, such as fuller's earth, filtering, and evaporating the solvent from the filtrate, the residues of wool grease in the bleaching agent being recovered by treatment with a polar solvent, such as acetone, and evaporation, to give a dark grease. The treatment may be carried out as a batch process or a continuous one, the wool grease solution being either agitated with the bleaching agent or passed through a bed composed of it. The process may be applied to sulphated or sulphonated wool grease. Specifications 354,775, 470,715, 507,335, 507,337, 544,497 and 553,322 are referred to.
