Abstract
655,811. Timing races. SHUTTELWORTH, H. V. Oct. 13, 1948, No. 26656. [Class 106 (iv)] The time taken to complete a race is indicated by the illumination in succession of electric lamps on a display board. In the preferred arrangement a shaft 25 is driven at one revolution per second from a synchronous motor 17 through a clutch 24, 30 which is engaged by an electromagnet 39 at the start of the race and disengaged by breaking the magnet circuit at the finish, brake discs 31, 35 being provided to stop the shaft. A rotary brush 44 carried by the shaft 25 makes successive contact with segments 45 on a fixed drum 46, each segment being in circuit with an indicating lamp on a dial 13, Fig. 1, which shows fractions of a second. An intermittent gear 59, 62 operates a 60-tooth wheel 61 with similar brush gear 64, 67 controlling the lamps in a dial 14 indicating elapsed seconds. A third dial for minutes may be provided and a high-speed zeroizing gear can be embodied.
