Abstract
A process of protecting or finishing the surfaces of metallic, ceramic or plastic articles comprises applying a metal layer by cathode disintegration or evaporation and then a layer of insulation by evaporation in high vacuum. The process may be continued with successive applications of metal and insulating material. The articles are degreased initially and introduced into a combined evaporation and sputtering chamber, which contains the materials in tungsten or molybdenum filaments or crucibles of heat resisting minerals.
