Abstract

[Class 12 (iii)] [Also in Group XXIV] In a gas compressor comprising pistons 6 coupled by connecting-rods 8 to the pins 18 of a crank-shaft 7, a groove 21 on each crank-pin 18 terminating a lubricating passage 17 therein conveying lubricant from a crank-shaft passage 16 to a connecting-rod passage 19 limits communication between these passages 16, 19 to a predetermined short period (of between 20 degrees and 90 degrees is shown) after top deadcentre piston position. This provides that the said communication obtains only during a low bearing pressure period, thereby minimizing the risk of crankpin oil film collapse, and that inertia of the oil in the passage 19 facilitates the action of an eccentric and spring-pressed vane pump 12, 13, which action is also centrifugally assisted by the crank-pin's eccentricity.
