654,902. Electromechanical delay lines. HAZELTINE CORPORATION. Oct. 11 1948, No. 26444. Convention date, Nov. 12, 1947. [Class 40 (viii)] An electromechanical delay line includes a strip 10 of magnetostrictive material supported by two clamps 11 and 12, the latter comprising resilient sound-absorbing material forced against each side of the strip by pressure-plates operated by nuts 18, and excitation and receiving windings are coupled to separate sections of the strip. As shown, there is one excitation winding 20a and two receiving windings 20b and 20c. A support unit for a winding consists of an insulating member 21 with an aperture 22 for the strip 10 round which is positioned the coil 23. Two pole shoes 24 and 25 of high permeability magnetic material surround the coil to confine the flux path to the part of strip 10 within the coil mounting unit. These shoes may consist of laminated strips or may be moulded from a mixture of powdered iron and a dielectric binder. Specification 654,903 is referred to.
