Abstract

654,437. Aircraft structures. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd. April 26, 1948, No. 11451. [Class 4] [Also in Group XL (c)] In an aeroplane having a metal structure, aportion of the structure is insulated from the main structure and used as an aerial. The insulated portion may comprise an aileron, elevator, fin or rudder or the tip of the fin, main-plane or tailplane and it may be fed to constitute a dipole or unipole. As shown in the Figure, the metallic frame members 4 of the fin are connected to the corresponding members 5 of the fuselage by insulators 3 and the metal skin of the fin and upper portion of the rudder is separated from the metal skin of the fuselage and lower portion of the rudder by an insulating fairing 6, a singlewire feeder 9 being connected to the fin internally. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the insulated portion comprises the upper half of the fin and rudder, and the two conductors of a twin feeder are connected respectively to the upper and lower conductive portions of the fin adjacent the insulating section. In order to reduce precipitation static due to corona discharge, the trailing edge of the fin is rounded and faired off to a knife edge by a dielectric moulding, Fig. 3 (not shown).
