Abstract
Quaternary salts of polyvinyl pyridines and quinolines are made by heating, e.g. from 60 DEG to 200 DEG C. a vinyl pyridine or a vinyl quinoline or their polymers with a quaternizing agent. The quaternization may be effected in mass or in the presence of an inert solvent such as 1-4 dioxane or nitrobenzene. Specified polymers are poly-2-vinylpyridine, 4-vinyl-pyridine and 2-vinylquinoline. Specified monomers are 2- and 4-vinyl pyridine. Specified quaternizing agents are methyl, ethyl, n-propyl, n-butyl, isobutyl p-toluenesulphonate; methyl, ethyl, n-propyl, n-butyl, isobutyl benzenesulphonate; dimethyl, di-n-propyl, di-n-butyl, diisobutyl sulphate; methyl, ethyl, n-propyl, n-butyl, isobutyl, n-nonyl, n-decyl iodide. The salts are useful as precipitants and mordants of acid dyes, also as emulsifying agents. Specifications 654,266, [Group XX], and 654,268 are referred to.
