Abstract
<PICT:0653965/IV (a)/1> Plasticized thermoplastic resinous compounds in dry powdered form are made by dispersing in a rapidly-moving body of heated gas a mixture of the powdered compound and a plasticizer which is liquid at mixing or absorption temperatures, until the compound has absorbed a substantial proportion of the plasticizer and holding the mixture at an elevated temperature with or without agitation until absorption of the plasticizer by the compound is complete and the compound has regained its original dry powdered form. After absorption of the plasticizer and whilst at elevated temperature the compound may be separated from the gas stream and agitated in an internal mixer until it becomes a dry powder. The powdered material from hopper 21 is sucked, at opening 20, into tube 1, which has air, heated at 2, circulating through it to cyclone separator 3, and is removed from the air at 3, taken up by screw-feed conveyer 31, in which it cools, and collected in container 35. The resinous compound may be a polymer or copolymer obtained by polymerizing one or more of the following monomers, ethylene, propylene, butylene, isobutylene, styrene, p-chlorostyrene, vinyl naphthalene, vinyl-chloride, -bromide, -fluoride, -acetate, -propionate, -butyrate or -benzoate, methyl-, ethyl-, n-butyl-, isobutyl-, dodecyl-, n-octyl-, 2-chloroethyl-, 2-chloropropyl-, 2,21-dichloroisopropyl-, phenyl-, or cyclohexyl-acrylate, methyl-alpha-chloro-acrylate, methyl methacrylate, ethyl methacrylate, methyl ethacrylate, acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, acrylamide, vinyl methyl ether, vinyl isobutyl ether, vinyl-2-chlorethyl ether, vinyl ethyl ether, vinyl octadecyl ether, vinyl methyl ketone, vinyl hexyl ketone, methyl isopropenyl ketone, vinylidene chloride, vinylidene chlorofluoride, N-vinyl pyrrole, N-vinyl carbazole, N-vinyl indole, N-vinyl pyrrolidene, N-vinyl succinimide, diethyl fumarate, diethyl monochloromaleate, ethyl maleate, isobutyl crotonate, methyl and ethyl crotonates, allyl hydracrylate, vinyl isopropyl ether, vinyl butyl ether and 2-vinyl furane. The plasticizer may be di-2-ethylhexyl-, dicyclohexyl-, dimethyl-cyclohexyl-, dibutoxyethyl-, di-(n)-butyl-, di-lauryl-, dimethyl glycol-, octadecyl butyl-, di-hexyl-, or didecyl-phthalate, tributyl-, tris-(beta-butoxyethyl)-, trioctyl-phosphate, dodecyl or diethylene glycol adipate, dodecyl oleate, tetrahydrofurfuryl oleate, ethylene glycol oleate, butyl acetyl ricinoleate, di-2-ethylhexyl sebacate, octadecyl butyl succinate, 1,10-decamethylene glycol dicaprylate, tributyl aconitate, butyl phthalyl butyl glycollate, di-esters of tri-ethylene glycol and aliphatic acids of 8 to 14 carbon atoms, acetylated castor oil, dilauryl oxalate, tetraethyl adipamide, N,N-dibutyl stearamide, methyl benzamide, n-mono-butyl benzene sulphonamide, N,N,N,N - tetraethyl adipamide, tetrahydronaphthyl phenyl ketone, methyl naphthyl phenyl ketone, undecyl naphthyl ketone, xylyl undecyl ketone, amyl naphthalene, polyamyl naphthalene, tetrabutyl urea, benzyl naphthalene, beta-phenoxymethyl tetralin, dibutyl thioglycollate or methylene bisbutyl thioglycollate. The dry powdered plasticized resinous compound may be mixed with finely-divided fillers, dyes, pigments and reinforcing agents, e.g. clay, carbon black, zinc oxide, magnesium oxides, aluminium oxides, lead carbonate, magnesium carbonate, calcium and lead silicates, barytes, lithopone, litharge, zinc carbonate, asbestos powder, waxes, diatomaceous earths, cobalt stearate, rosin or shellac. The compositions may be extruded, moulded, formed into films and sheets, coated on copper wire and, dissolved in solvents, applied as coatings to fabric.
