Abstract

653,869. Hydraulic shock absorbers. GIRLING, Ltd. July 29, 1948, No. 20199. [Class 108(iii)] In an hydraulic shock absorber for vehicles, of the kind in which a restricted liquid-flow passage is formed by the clearance between the peripheral surface of the piston A and cylinder wall a, the clearance is provided by an intermediate portion c of the piston of relatively short axial length having an annular groove on each side of it connected by one or more longitudinal grooves or passages e of substantial cross-sectional area, to the adjacent end of the piston. The invention is described as applied to the pistons of both direct-acting (Figs, 3, 4, not shown), and double-acting (Figs. 5, 6, not shown), shock absorbers. These pistons have in addition to the working clearance, valve controlled ports. The end portions b of the pistons minimise the effect of tilting of the piston (due to wear) on the clearance c. The piston is made of aluminium or a zinc base alloy, and the cylinder of cast iron, so that the liquid flow clearance is reduced with a rise in temperature.
