Abstract
Solutions of mixed allyl starch ethers (for preparation see Group IV (b)), in organic solvents such as aliphatic hydrocarbons, e.g. gasoline, petroleum ether and kerosene leave a film which polymerizes after setting at room or elevated temperatures particularly in the presence of catalysts, e.g. cobalt naphthenate, and is then insoluble in organic solvents.ALSO:Mixed allyl starch ethers containing substantially no free hydroxyl groups and which are soluble in organic solvents such as aliphatic hydrocarbons, e.g. gasoline, pet. ether and kerosene, are made by partially etherifying starch by heating in the presence of aqueous caustic alkali with an alkyl, aralkyl or alkenyl halide other than allyl halide, and substantially etherifying the product by heating in the presence of aqueous caustic alkali with an allyl halide. Ether groups specified other than allyloxy are methoxy, ethoxy, propoxy, butoxy, pentoxy, hexoxy, lauroxy, vinyloxy, crotyloxy, isocrotyloxy, oxybenzyl and oxycinnamyl. The following starch ethers may be prepared: butyl-allyl containing 1.5 butyl and 1.5 allyl groups per glucose p unit, hexyl-allyl containing 1.0 hexyl and 2.0 allyl groups per glucose unit and lauryl-allyl containing 0.8 lauryl and 2.2 allyl groups per glucose unit. Heptyl allyl starch ether is made by heating starch in aqueous caustic soda for half-an-hour at 65 DEG C., reacting with heptyl iodide in the presence of additional caustic soda at 95 DEG C. for 1 hour, 105 DEG C. for 2 hours and 118 DEG C. for 3 hours when the mixture is cooled and neutralized with 50 per cent acetic acid, the precipitate containing 1.7 heptyl units collected and dried at 40 DEG C. is reacted with allyl bromide in M.E.K. and aqueous caustic soda and the resultant mixed ether isolated. Alternatively the partly alkylated starch need not be isolated before allylation a butyl allyl ether containing 1.4 allyl groups and 1.6 butyl groups per glucose unit being made in this manner.
