Abstract

Aliphatic diethers of polyoxy-1,2-propylene diols are made by reacting with a dialkyl sulphate or an aliphatic halide in presence of an alkali metal hydroxide, a polyoxy-1,2-propylene diol or an aliphatic monoether thereof, which diol or mono-ether has an average molecular weight such that the portion attributable to oxy-1,2-propylene groups is at least 800. Suitable starting materials are described in Specification 601,604. 1-2 mols. of dialkyl sulphate per hydroxy group in the starting material and 2 mols. of alkali metal hydroxide per mol. of dialkyl sulphate are preferably used. The temperature is maintained between 90 DEG and 100 DEG C. About 4 mols. of organic halide are employed per hydroxyl group with about 1.25 mol. of alkali metal hydroxide per mol. of organic halide, and the temperature is 100-140 DEG C. A diluent for the reaction mixture may be used, e.g. dibutyl ether or toluene. The etherifying aliphatic group may contain up to 12 carbon atoms. Examples are described of the preparation of the following ethers: di-ethyl, ethyl butyl, butyl-n-propyl, dibutyl, butyl-n-octyl, butyl-n-dodecyl; their physical properties are described. They are useful as lubricants, if desired in admixture with petroleum oils (see Group III), as hydraulic fluids (see Group XXIX), or as cutting oils.ALSO:Aliphatic diethers of polyoxy-1,2-propylene diols (see Group IV(a)) having an average molecular weight excluding the terminal ether group of at least 800, are useful alone or with petroleum oils as lubricants, especially for low temperature work, or as the lubricating component of low temperature greases, or as cutting oils.
