Abstract

<PICT:0653757/IV (a)/1> Synthetic linear polyamides are melt-spun by introducing the polyamide and water vapour into a heated space to melt the polyamide and to provide a constant vapour pressure of water, and extruding the polymer. As shown, the polymer in flake form is fed into the melt spinner by means of an open hopper 11 into a preheater 12, heated by a steam jacket 13 or other means. Steam at 10-100 lbs./sq. inch pressure and 115-170 DEG C. is supplied to the jacket at 14 and withdrawn at the bottom of the jacket. At 16 a portion of the steam is bye-passed through a pipe 17 carrying a valve 18 and thence to a chamber 19, where it is at atmospheric pressure. Steam from the chamber 19 passes up through the polymer flake and out into the air at 20, thus blanketing the polymer. After mixing with the steam, the flake passes to a grid melter heated by steam, electricity or other means. The molten polymer is pumped from the pool 22 by the pump 23 and delivered to the spinneret assembly 24. By this means a constant amount of moisture is maintained in the melt resulting in a more uniform yarn. The steam pressure in the chamber may be as high as 30 pounds per square inch, but steam pressures of 7-10 pounds per square inch are satisfactory, the maximum pressure depending on the polyamide to be spun and the type of yarn formed. Polymer flake with a moisture content as high as 6.5 per cent may be used, although flake which has reached equilibrium with atmospheric conditions and contains about 4 per cent moisture is preferred. It is not necessary to dry or condition the polymer before spinning. Suitable polyamides are polyhexamethylene adipamide, polytetramethylene adipamide, polytetramethylene sebacamide, polypentamethylene adipamide, polypentamethylene sebacamide, polyhexamethylene sebacamide, polyhexamethylene glutaramide, polyoctamethylene adipamide, poly-p-xylylene sebacamide, the polyamide from 3,31-diaminodipropyl ether and adipic acid, and polymerized epsilon - aminocaproic acid, 9 - aminononanoic acid and 11-amino-undecanoic acid, and these may be used singly or mixed. Specifications 461,236 and 461,237 are referred to.
