Abstract

543,062. Artificial filaments, films &c. DREYFUS, H. Aug. 5, 1940, No. 12587. [Class 2 (ii)] Filaments, films and the like are produced by extruding a solution of a filament-forming polymer or mixture of such polymers in an organic solvent under a pressure of about half an atmosphere. An elongated spinning chamber 1 is shown with heating pipes 2, and an outlet 3 to which suction can be applied to evacuate the chamber to the required degree. The solution of the polymer is fed from the container 4 to a measuring pump 5 by means of nitrogen or other inert gas supplied to the container through the pipe 6. It then passes through the filters 7, 8 to the jet 9, and the extruded filaments 10 are set, while passing through the chamber 1 and are cooled in the lower chamber 11 before being delivered by the roller 12 to the twisting spindle 13. The jet 9 may be filled with heated solution before being applied to the supply pipe, and steam pipes 16 serve as common heating means for the container 4 and the space 14 in which the pump and filters are situated. The solution contains at least 25 per cent. by weight of polymer and the solvent liquid comprises at least one of the following-: phenol, cresol, xylenol, formic acid and acetic acid. The solution also contains a small quantity of an aromatic hydrocarbon.
