Abstract

653,709. Moulding turbine blades &c. from metal powder. AMERICAN ELECTRO METAL CORPORATION. Aug. 16, 1948, No. 21607. Convention date, Sept. 2, 1947. [Class 87 (ii)] [Also in Group XXII] A method of making turbine blades and the like comprises compressing metal powder by punch and die assemblies to form a compact with opposite surfaces laterally convex and concave, sintering the compact and then pressing the blank with other punch and die assemblies into its final shape, those parts of both of the punch and die assemblies which form the root portion being movable with respect to the parts which form the blade proper. Metal powder is poured into a die 24 having an opening whose bottom is constituted by a plunger 28 at the root-forming portion and three plungers 29, 30, 31 at the blade-forming portion as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and is compressed by punches 43 and 44 for the blade and root portions respectively. Plungers 29, 30 and 31 are depressed against springs of different strengths so that as the punches descend, the upper surfaces of the plungers form a continuous lower surface on the compact. As the punches are retracted, the plungers rise to eject the compact. The lower face of the punch 43 may be curved and may have sharp projections or chambers 51, 52 at the sides, as seen in Fig. 10. The compact is then sintered, forged to its final shape and finished (see Group XXII).
