Abstract

A sheet of unwoven fibres of random distribution and having a continuous coating on both sides so as to bind together the surface fibres is characterized in that the coating on at least one side consists of 25 to 65 parts of a solid polyethylene glycol having an average molecular weight of from 1000 to 7000 and 35 to 75 parts of a styrene-maleic anhydride interpolymer, said coating having been subjected to a temperature of from 250 DEG to 450 DEG F. The coating may be made water-repellent by being formed of 25 to 40 parts of glycol and 60 to 75 parts of interpolymer or it may be made water-pervious by being formed of 40 to 65 parts of glycol and 35 to 60 parts of interpolymer. Where this coating is applied only to one side of the sheet the other side may be coated with carboxy methyl cellulose which has been rendered water-insoluble by heat treatment to a temperature of from 300 DEG to 450 DEG F.ALSO:A sheet of unwoven fibres of random distribution and having a continuous coating on both sides so as to bind together the surface fibres is characterized in that the coating on at least one side consists of 25 to 65 parts of a solid polyethylene glycol having an average molecular weight of from 1,000 to 7,000 and 35 to 75 parts of a styrenemaleic anhydride interpolymer, said coating having been subjected to a temperature of from 250 to 450 DEG F. The coating may be made water-repellent by being formed of 25 to 40 parts of glycol and 60 to 75 parts of interpolymer or the coating may be made water-pervious by being formed of 40 to 65 parts of glycol and 35 to 60 parts of interpolymer. Where this coating is applied only to one side of the sheet the other side may be coated with carboxymethyl cellulose which has been rendered water-insoluble by heat treatment to a temperature of from 300 to 450 DEG F. A sheet of material prepared in accordance with the invention may be used in the production of disposable diapers, bibs &c.
