Abstract

653,483. Cash registers. NATIONAL CASH REGISTER CO. Sept. 13, 1948, No. 23992. Convention date, March 10. [Class 106 (i)] The initial movement of a control member of a cash register releases a printing hammer for co-operation with type on manually-settable slides and continued movement of the control member releases, to the action of a spring, mechanism which is adapted subsequently to be restored by manual action to effect the engagement of teeth on the slides with a totalizer, the restoration of the slides, and the subsequent disengagement of the slides from the totalizer. Each digit of an amount to be entered is set on a differential slide 15 by means of a projecting finger 14. The slides.are guided by fixed and movable rods 17, 18 and are held in their set positions by a sprung detent 9. A key 31 is then depressed which, through a bellcrank 34, causes a sprung plunger 36 to rock a pawl 26 and so release a sprung hammer 24. The latter co-operates with type 23 integral with each slide 15 to print the item on a record-strip 42 which is guided from a supply roll 90 to a feed roll 95. Further depression of the key 31 then trips a latch 46 to release a cash drawer 11 which is forced out by a spring 52 acting through a lever 50 pivoted on a shaft 51. The drawer is then pushed in to rock the lever 50 counter-clockwise and re-tension the spring 52. The rod 18 supporting the slides 15 is carried by a pair of pitmans 19, one of which carries a stud 62 which runs in a cam slot 60 in the lever 50. A pawl 61 also co-operates with the stud 62 so that, as the restoration of the lever 50 begins, the stud 62 raises the pitmans 19 to engage racks 21 on the slides 15 with totalizer wheels 22. During the initial clockwise rocking of the lever 50, the stud 62 engages a cam surface 65 on the pawl 61, to rock the pawl clockwise, and passes under the pawl without being raised. A pawl 75, pivoted on the lever 50 and engaged with the stud 74 in a lever 72 as the initial movement of the lever 50 was completed, now rocks the lever 72 clockwise and a rod 71 carried thereby engages projections 70 on the slides 15 and restores them to enter the item into the totalizer wheels 22. During this restoration, a link 84 pivoted to the pitman 19, disengages the detent 9. At the same time, a pawl 41 on a link 98 pivoted to the lever 50 steps on the feed roll 95 for the record-strip, the pawl 26, which is also carried by the link 98, withdraws the printing hammer 24 against its spring 30, and means (not described), steps on an ink-ribbon 110. Finally, when the cam 60 has lowered the pitmans 19 and slides 15, a link 81 pivoted to the lever 50, operates cams which cause the transfers to be entered by mechanism (not described). The record strip 42 passes beneath a glass window 93 which has an opening through which autographic entries may be made, a spring table 104 being arranged beneath the opening. A bill 105 may be inserted over the glass 93 to receive one print, or, by means of carbon-paper, two prints of the item. Carbon paper is also provided when a bill is printed to cause a print to be made on the record-strip.
