Abstract
653,344. Bottles, filling. CHERRY-BURRELL CORPORATION. May 3, 1948, No. 12075. Convention date, Oct. 21, 1947. [Class 125(ii)] A valve for filling containers, e.g. milk bottles, from a reservoir comprises a tubular valve stem 18, removably mounted in an opening 11 in the reservoir bottom, and having a valve head 22 which is sealed by a vertically movable e sleeve valve element 23 pressed downwardly by a resilient bellows 25 which conducts the milk to the bottle when the sleeve 23 is raised by upward pressure of the bottle mouth against a gasket 42. Venting is controlled by a valve 35 which, by the action of a spring 39, seals the end of a vent tube 34, slidable in the valve stem 18, except when the vent tube is raised from the valve 35 by rods 30 which move upwardly with, and guide, the sleeve 23 and abut against a flange 41 on the vent tube, the air from the bottle then passing through flute 36 cut in the underside of the valve 22. The underside of the gasket 42 is formed with indentations and slightly raised ribs 43 and is deformable under the pressure of the bottle to form an effective seal. When the pressure is released, however, the ribs resume their original shape and move the bottle mouth away from the surfaces of the indentations to provide an air bleed into the bottle after both the valves 22, 35 are closed. The valve stem 18 is'supported in the opening 11 by a spider 10 having upper and lower bearing parts 13, 14 which embrace enlargements on the stem 18 and are joined by vertical ribs. .Lugs 17 on the part 14 engage the underside of the opening 11 and the upper part 13 rests upon a spring clip 12 which straddles the opening 11 and snaps into a groove 20 formed in the stem 18. The lower part of the stem 18 is provided with ,a deflector 32, shaped as a triangle with its apex upwards, and a centralizing lug 33 diametrically opposed to the deflector. The milk is thus discharged from the side of the valve opposite to the deflector. A plurality of the valves are spaced circularly around the bottom of the reservoir which is provided with means for maintaining a uniform milk level, and a desired pressure or vacuum above the surface, of the milk.
