Abstract

Oil or fat-containing solid materials of animal or vegetable origin, such as oil-seeds or cereal germs are extracted with 1,1-dichloroethane or with mixtures of fat solvents containing 1,1-dichloro-ethane. The mixture may contain 1,1,1-trichloro-ethane. The extraction may be carried out at ordinary or elevated temperatures and the extract may be freed from solvent by distillation followed by steaming or evaporation under reduced pressure. In the example 10 kg. of wheat-germ are extracted with 100 kg. 1,1-dichloro-ethane in three portions at room temperature and the extract is separated from the residue by centrifuging. The bulk of the solvent is distilled off from the extract at 60 DEG C. and the remainder completely removed by blowing with nitrogen at about 50-60 DEG C., leaving an oil rich in vitamin E. The extraction-residue is blown with warm nitrogen at about 50 DEG C. until free from any odour of the solvent. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also extraction with a solvent comprising a chlorinated hydrocarbon containing at least two carbon atoms, at least one of which is not connected to chlorine but to hydrogen and/or to a chlorine-free hydrocarbon radical or radicals. An example is given of the extraction of oilseed cake with 1,1-dichloroethylene and the use of iso-propyl-chloride, 1,2-dichloro-butene and iso-amyl chloride as solvents is also referred to. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
