Abstract

652,497. Firearms ; cartridges. CERRELLA, V. Sept. 15, 1948, No. 24170. [Classes 9 (i), 92 (ii) and 119] The breech block of a firearm using cartridges with ejectable percussion caps has an axial bore, through which the firing pin operates, and a radial bore communicating with the axial bore, whereby the percussion cap under the influence of the gases of explosion re-cocks the firing pin as it is impelled first along the axial bore and then through the radial bore. In the form shown the breech block 1 is formed with resilient fins 12, and is recessed at 2 tor tne passage of a firing pin 14 and at 5 for the ejection of the percussion caps. The firing pin has an enlarged portion 16 and is secured at its rear end to a member 26 which slides in a tubular guide 27 and is acted upon by a return spring. A device 18a is slidably mounted on the firing pin between the parts 16 and 26, and is formed with an inclined surface 23 adapted to engage the fins 12. Operation. The return spring acting on the member 26 urges the firing pin, and with it the device 18a and the lock, forwardly from the retracted position shown in Fig. 1, thus introducing a round b into the cartridge chamber 6. At tnis stage the lock closes the recess 8 at the rear end of the barrel and further forward movement of the lock is prevent ed The firing pin, however, continues its forward movement, and in doing so causes the surface 23 to open the fins 12 into locking engagement with a fixed ring 28. Upon firing, the combustion gases pass rearwardly through bores e, Fig. 4, of the cartridge shell and eject the percussion cap d which in turn projects the firing pin to the rear. In this latter movement the part 16 of the firing pin drives the device 18a to the rear, thus allowing the fins 12 to become unlocked, the return spring is compressed, and the cap d after striking a wall 30 in the lock is ejected through the opening 5.
