Abstract

652,290. Making and filling tea and like bags. PNEUMATIC SCALE CORPORATION. Feb. 24, 1948, No. 5469. Convention date, May 8, 1940. [Class 94(i)] In a machine for making and filling tea and like bags, a web 1 of bag material, e.g. fibrous material containing a pressure - responsive binder, is advanced step by step by means of feed rolls 20, 21 over a guide roll 12 and folded longitudinally by a former 13, the sides 2 and 3 thus formed being adhesively united simultaneously along a transverse zone and a longitudinal marginal zone by L-shaped dies 8 and 9 operated intermittently. After each operation of the dies, the open-ended pocket formed between the sides of the web is filled with tea &c. through a spout 14, the web advanced one step and the dies re-operated to seal the top of the pocket and form the next pocket. The completed bags are severed from the web by cutters 18, 19. The dies may be arranged to print, emboss or perforate the adhesively-united edges of the bag. In a modification, Fig. 6 (not shown), the web 1a passes between rolls 22, 23 which apply continuous edge bands 5a and transverse bands 4a of adhesive. If heat is required to soften or dry the binder or adhesive, provisions may be made for heating the dies.
