Abstract
652,133. Determining physical qualities of materials. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Sept. 6, 1948, No. 23410. Convention date, Sept. 18, 1947. Addition to 652,132. [Class 37] Apparatus as described. in Specification 648,367 and the parent Specification for detecting certain finely divided substances in a gas by bringing the gas into contact with a positively charged electrode to produce a flow of positive ions is characterized by the addition of audible or visual means for indicating the presence of the detected substance by means of a bridge circuit. As shown, the discharge cell 1, together with resistance 15 and potentiometer 16, form a bridge, whose unbalance current is amplified by valve 17 and indicated by a meter 22 in the anode lead. The anode current may also produce a pulsating current by charging condenser 29 in parallel with discharge tube 23, the resulting A.C. being fed to a loud-speaker 30 via an amplifier valve 31. Visual indications may be obtained from the discharge tube 23, or the loud-speaker 30 may be replaced by suitable light producing means.
