Abstract
Sodium carbonate is made by reacting sodium nitrate in solution with magnesium bicarbonate to produce magnesium nitrate and insoluble sodium bicarbonate and separating and roasting the latter. In one embodiment, sodium sulphate is added to a solution of calcium nitrate, coming from a subsequent step of the cyclic process, to produce a precipitate of hydrated calcium sulphate and a solution of sodium nitrate which is freed from dissolved calcium sulphate by the addition of barium carbonate. By calcining calcium carbonate there are obtained (a) quick-lime, which is converted into milk of lime and reacted with magnesium nitrate to produce calcium-nitrate, for reaction with sodium sulphate, and magnesium hydroxide, and (b) carbon dioxide which is reacted with magnesium hydroxide to form hydrated magnesium carbonate, which is precipitated as such in the cold, and this is converted into the bicarbonate by reaction under pressure with carbon dioxide obtained by roasting the sodium bicarbonate precipitated by reacting the magnesium bicarbonate with sodium nitrate, the magnesium nitrate formed in the latter reaction being returned to the process. The sodium nitrate in solution may either be mixed with hydrated magnesium carbonate and carbon dioxide introduced under pressure while cooling with stirring, or be mixed with a solution of magnesium bicarbonate, saturated previously in the cold under pressure of carbon dioxide, or be mixed with hydrated magnesia and carbon dioxide bubbled therethrough under increasing pressure as the temperature is lowered. When sodium nitrate is used as starting material, calcium nitrate produced during the process may be separated out, and when sodium sulphate is used as starting material, gypsum is separated as a by-product.
