Abstract
651,465. Tubular heat-exchange elements. BROWN FINTUBB CO. July 30, 1947, No. 20641. Convention date, Nov. 14, 1938. [Class 64(iii)] [Also in Group XXII] A heat-exchange element comprises a tube 15 with a plurality of fin members projecting from the surface of the tube, each fin member having a base portion 16 and at least one flange 17 the base being united to the tube by a series of evenlyspaced spot welds of a combined area substantially equal to the longitudinal crosssectional area of the flange or flanges and the total perimetric length of the welds substantially equal to the total length of the flange or flanges. The fins may be channel-shaped members, Fig. 1, with the web 16 conforming to the outer surface tube the channel members being placed symmetrically round the tube and welded at least two at a time using a single pair of electrodes. The fins may be arranged annularly on the tube as in Fig. 5, two welds being made simultaneously at diametrically opposite points using electrodes 27, 28. Roller electrodes may be used to produce the spot welds, Fig. 6, two channel-shaped fin members being placed on opposite sides of the tube and electrodes 22 placed in the channels. Rollers 23, 24 at the end of a forked rod or mandrel 25 and connected by a brace 26 are placed inside the tube. The welding current travels from the upper electrode 22 through the web 16 of one fin member and the pipe 15 to roller 23 and through the mandrel to the roller 24 and hence through the pipe and the second fin member to the other electrode 22. Alternatively the mandrel 25 may be used as one electrode and the two rollers 22 joined to make the other electrode. The fins may also be arranged spirally on the tube.
