Abstract

650,703. Load-carrying pallets. CLARK EQUIPMENT CO. Dec. 16, 1947, Nos. 33115 and 33116. Convention dates, Oct. 17, 1946, and Dec. 21, 1946. [Class 78 (iv)] A method of handling material which comprises placing a load upon a sheet, applying tension to a margin of the sheet and drawing the sheet and load on to a flat supporting member for transporting the load by that member. The load 14 is deposited on a pallet 16 having an upturned edge 22. To transport the load, a platen 24 is brought alongside the edge 22 which is gripped to pull the load forward as the platen is moved underneath. The fork of the transporting vehicle then engages the platen and transfers the load, the platen being removed as the load descends into position. The upturned edges 22 may then be turned up or flattened out. To unload, the edge 22 of the pallet is gripped and the platen pushed underneath before the transporting vehicle removes the load. Alternative forms of pallets are described, one having an indented edge, another pallet having an edge complementarily shaped, another has a grooved edge, another turned back to stiffen, and reinforced by fabric. Preferably the pallets are made of corrugated cardboard or of fibreboard, but they may be made of metal.
