Abstract

650,591. Seed-sowing machines. BONE, A. S., and ROWBOTHAM, S. March 19, 1948, No. 8253. [Class 6(i)] A seed-sowing machine comprises a hopper 10 and a rotatable cylindrical sleeve 15, the curved surface of which closes the delivery end of the hopper and which is formed internally with an annular recess 25, adjacent which are a plurality of angularly spaced bores 26 terminating in nozzles 28. A fixed cylindrical drum 16 is located within the sleeve 15 and is formed with a plurality of radial ports (not shown) opening into the recess 25. A coupling 47 is connected to means for producing suction within the drum and a coupling 46 is connected to means for producing air at high pressure and is joined by a pipe 45 to a cylinder 43 having a head projecting into the recess 25 and provided with an aperture 44, a spring- loaded plunger 41 also projecting into the recess to keep the sleeve 15 properly aligned in the drum 16. The sleeve 15 is connected to a pulley 24 rotated by power from a tractor to which the drum is affixed. The suction in the drum is conveyed to the recess 25 in the sleeve causing a seed to adhere to each nozzle 28 when passing through the hopper. The seed is discharged down a shoot by air pressure when the aperture 44 registers with the hole 26. In a modification the nozzle 28 may be enlarged and provided with a wire mesh to retain the seed. It is stated in the Provisional Specification that the blast of air which expels the seed may be used to supply a measured quantity of fertilizer with each delivery of seed.
