Abstract

650,121. Bubble towers. EVERY, C. E. (Petro-Chem Process Co., Inc.). May 5, 1948, No. 12406. [Class 55(ii)] A fractionating column has bubbling hoods incorporating downcomer pipes in which separation of vapour from liquid occurs, contact between vapour and liquid occurring inside the hoods. In the form shown, a bubble tower 10 has vapour risers 12 set in each plate 11 and extending above the liquid level therein and downcomers 13 mounted within the risers and extending from above the liquid level in the tray downwardly to beneath the level in the tray below. Each downcomer is provided near the bottom with an anti-frothing grid 17 and at the top with a lip 13a which is doubled back over the top of the riser 12. A hood 15 is mounted at the top of the downcomer and has an inner sleeve 15a, flared and serrated at its lower end 15c, extending into the downcomer, and an outer sleeve 15b extending well below the liquid level in the tray. In operation, vapour rises through the annular space 14 between the riser and downcomer and passes down over the top of the riser to bubble under lip 13a through the liquid enclosed by the sleeve 15b. Uncondensed vapour with entrained liquid passes over into the downcomer, through serrations 15c, where the vapour separates out and rises to the next tray, the liquid draining back to the tray below.
