Abstract

650,069. Grinding-machines. CHURCHILL MACHINE TOOL CO., Ltd. May 24, 1948. No. 13955. [Class 60] [Also in Groups XXXV and XXXVII] In a precision grinding-machine fall of the load current of the grinding wheel motor below a predetermined value causes, through an amplifier and relay, the starting of feeding means for the grinding wheel or workpiece, which continues until the load current is restored to the predetermined value. In Fig. 1 a potentiometer b, connected in parallel with the series field c of a D.C. motor a driving a grinding machine wheel, provides a voltage, dependent on armature current, which is amplified by a triode v<SP>1</SP> and applied to the gridcathode circuit of a gas-filled triode v<SP>2</SP> in such a manner that when armature current is below a predetermined value valve v<SP>2</SP> is conductive to energize, from an A.C. source, a relay d, contact d<SP>1</SP>, of which closes the circuit of a further relay f, contact f<SP>1</SP> of which completes the circuit of a D.C. motor n producing feed between the grinding wheel and the work until the current of a motor a reaches the predetermined value preset by potentiometer b. In a modification, Fig. 2, (not shown) D.C. motor n is replaced by an electromagnetic step-by-step motor operating a ratchet and pawl feed mechanism. The Provisional Specification describes an alternative relay arrangement for controlling a step-by-step or torque motor adjusting the feed. Rectification of the output of a current transformer associated with an A.C. motor driving the grinding wheel, to provide the contral voltage is referred to.
