Abstract

650,024. Rubbing-leathers for textile machinery. DAYTON RUBBER CO. Dec. 9, 1946, No. 36383. [Class 120(i)] [Also in Group VIII] A rubbing apron for use in textile machinery comprises a fabric base layer joined to a fibre-contacting layer of rubber or synthetic rubber, and a layer of cords interposed between said base layer and said fibre-contacting layer while longitudinally extending reinforcements are positioned adjacent the lateral edges of the apron as an integral part of the apron. The reinforcements may be narrow fabric plies superposed on the cord layers, or heavier and less extensible cords than the remaining cords. An endless rubbing apron comprises superimposed fabric layers 18, Fig. 3, a layer of rubber or rubber-like material 22, and an interposed cord layer with small cords 24 at the centre and heavier edge cords 26. The apron is built up on a mandrel, the fabric layers, impregnated or coated with rubber, being first wound on, one at a time and in alternately opposite directions. The fabric may be wound straight, or on the bias. The heavy cords may be straight or wound on spirally. The light cords are wound on spirally from each edge towards the centre. The rubber layer is then applied, the assembly is wrapped and vulcanized, and the rubber surface buffed or ground. Additional fabric plies 28, Fig. 6, may be provided, to prevent abrasion of the edge of the apron. The fabric plies 28 provide an anchor-strip for buttons 30 which are riveted thereto. Fabric plies 44, Fig. 8, may be superposed on the edge portions of the cord layer 42, providing anchor means for buttons 46. The fibre-contacting layer may be of butyl rubber, compounded with a copolymer of butadiene and acrylonitrile and, if desired, with neoprene, or of a composition comprising a copolymer of butadiene and acrylonitrile. The fabric reinforcement may be of rayon or nylon, and the cords may be of cotton, rayon, nylon, glass, or spun wire.
