Abstract

650,013. Protective arrangements. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. Sept. 1, 1948, No. 23008. Convention date, Nov. 28, 1947. [Class 38 (iv)] To prevent excessive gas pressure in a lightning arrester of the expulsion type comprising spaced electrodes 3, 8 surrounded by an insulating tube 1 of fibre, or other material capable of evolving a gas upon the occurrence of a discharge between the electrodes, a loose stack of circular flat elements 10, 11 of a similar gas-evolving material partially fills the space between the electrodes, the elements being free to move axially to permit gas to flow be tween them during a discharge. Preferably the elements 10 are in the form of split rings to pro vide central spaces into which the gas can flow to relieve the pressure The elements 11 may be in the form of imperforate discs of smaller diameter than the elements 10 and having radial slots 13 in their faces to communicate with the interior of the rings. The splits in adjacent rings are staggered. The electrode support 2 may be hollow to provide further gas expansion space Several modified forms of the elements 10, 11 are described, including one in which radial lugs are provided on the elements for centring them in the tube 1.
