Abstract

Stable aqueous dispersions of polymeric organic polysulphides are prepared by reacting water-soluble polysulphides with formaldehyde alkylene dihalides, or like alkylene compounds containing two acid radicals in aqueous media in the presence of emulsifying or dispersing agents. Specified emulsifying &c. agents are lignin sulphonates, alkyl benzene sulphonates, aralkyl sulphonates, and sorbitan monolaurates. Specified alkylene compounds are ethylene dichloride and dibromide, propylene dichloridedibromide, the dichlorides and dibromides of unsaturated hydrocarbon gases or other reaction products with sulphur dichloride, or other alkylene compounds of the kind above specified in which the alkylene chain is interrupted by oxygen linkages, sulphur linkages, and/or phenylene groups. According to examples: (1) an aqueous solution containing (NH4)2S4.5 and sodium lignin sulphonate is added slowly with stirring to 37 per cent formalin maintained at 30 DEG C.; (2) an aqueous solution containing Na2S4.5 and sodium lignin sulphonate is added slowly with stirring to ethylene dichloride kept at 55 DEG C.; (3) an aqueous solution containing Na2S4.5 and sodium lignin sulphonate is added slowly with stirring to b ,b -dichlorethyl ether maintained at 65 DEG C. The polysulphide dispersions in admixture with a 2,2-bis-(aromatic) substituted halogenated ethane, e.g. D.D.T. are used for spraying horticultural products (see Group VI).ALSO:A composition adapted for horticultural spray use comprises a 2, 2-bis-(aromatic) substituted halogenated ethane, and a polymeric organic polysulphide preferably in the form of an aqueous dispersion. Specified halogenated ethanes are 1, 1, 1-trichloroethanes in which the 2, 2, bissubstituents are parachlorophenyl, p-tolyl, p-bromophenyl, phenyl, p-hydroxyphenyl, p-acetoxyphenyl, p-fluorphenyl, p-ethoxyphenyl, p-n-propoxyphenyl, p-n-butoxyphenyl, 5-hydroxy-2, 3, 6-trichlorophenyl, p-chlorophenoxy, p-nitrophenyl, 4-carboxy-3-hydroxyphenyl. and p-chlorothiophenyl, similar compounds in which bromine replaces chlorine, the reaction products of cresols with chloral or chloral hydrate and the reaction products of the corresponding thiophenols. The composition may also include a clay extender such as bentonite and a wetting agent.
