Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the formula: <FORM:0778759/IV(b)/1> in which Ar is substituted or unsubstituted aryl, B is a single bond or straight or branched aliphatic chain of not more than 3 carbon atoms, X is S, SO or SO2 and Y is halogen; also a process for the production of such compounds which comprises the interaction of equimolecular proportions of a halogen and the compound Ar-B-S-CCl = CHCl, followed by dehydrohalogenation of the product to give the corresponding sulphide, followed, if desired, by oxidizing to sulphoxide or sulphone. In examples, 1:1:2 - trichloro - 2 - 41 - chlorophenyl-, methylphenyl -, isopropylphenyl - and some dichlorophenyl and methyl-chloro-phenyl-thioethylenes are produced by chlorination of the corresponding unsaturated ethylene compounds; trihalogen compounds are also obtained by bromination of such compounds; the dehydrohalogenation is effected with alkali metal hydroxides, and oxidation may be carried out with acidic hydrogen peroxide to give the corresponding sulphinyl and sulphonyl chloroethylene derivatives, of which 1:1:2-trichloro-2-41-chlorophenyl-, sulphinyl- and sulphonyl-ethylene are typical. The products are fungicides &c. The substituted phenyl-dichloro-thioethylenes are obtained by reaction between trichloroethylene and the required substituted thiophenol; the products include dichloro and dimethyl phenyl derivatives; brominated products include 1:2 - dichloro - 1:2 - dibromo-1-41 - chlorophenylthioethane, the 1:2 - dichloro - 2 - bromo - 1:41 - chlorophenylthioethylene and the corresponding sulphinyl and sulphonyl derivatives.ALSO:The invention comprises fungicidal, insecticidal and acaricidal compositions containing compounds of the formula <FORM:0778759/VI/1> in which An is substituted or unsubstituted aryl, B is a single bond or straight or branched aliphatic chain of not more than 3 carbon atoms. X is S, SO or SO2 and Y is halogen (see Group IVb); a composition of 1 : 1 : 2 - trichloro - 2 : 41 chlorobenzene sulphonylethylene as a wettable powder for spraying containing 25 per cent of active product, and as a fine aqueous suspension with xylene and "Tween-" (Registered Trade Mark) are described; 1 : 1 : 2 - trichloro - 2 : 31 : 41 - dimethyl benzene sulphonyl ethylene gives a similar aqueous suspension; generally the products may be made up as emulsions, solutions, with wetting &c. agents, and mixed with synergistic products.
