Abstract

The invention comprises sulphonyl cyanamide compounds (and mixtures thereof) of formula <FORM:0796697/IV (b)/1> wherein R is an aliphatic hydrocarbon radical having a chain length of at least 10 carbon atoms, a cycloaliphatic hydrocarbon radical or an alkyl-substituted aromatic hydrocarbon radical, X is hydrogen or an alkali or alkaline earth metal and n is the valency of X. The compounds may be prepared by reacting a sulphochloride of formula R.SO2Cl with cyanamide, preferably in the form of its alkali and alkaline earth metal salts such as the sodium or calcium salts. Specified sulphochlorides are those derived from: aliphatic hydrocarbons having a chain length of 10-18 carbon atoms, cyclohexane or its alkyl derivatives and alkyl-benzenes having an alkyl chain of 3-12 carbon atoms. The compounds are capillary active and may be used as wetting, washing or emulsifying agents. In examples, sodium or calcium cyanamide was reacted with the product obtained by reacting a mixture of aliphatic hydrocarbons having a boiling range of 230-310 DEG C. with a mixture of equal parts of sulphur dioxide and chlorine, to give the sodium and calcium salts of the paraffin sulphonyl cyanamide.
