Abstract
The invention comprises sulphonamides of the formula <FORM:0886692/IV (b)/1> wherein R is a group which is convertible to an amino group by hydrolysis or reduction, e.g. an acylamino group R2CONH-, R2 being a hydrocarbon radical or an alkoxy group, a nitro group or an arylazo group, X is a halogen atom and Y is hydrogen, an alkyl group or a halogen atom; and the preparation of these compounds by reacting a sulphonamide R.C6H4.SO2NH2 or a metal salt thereof, preferably an alkali metal salt, with the appropriate 4 : 6-dihalopyrimidine (optionally bearing a 5-halo- or 5-alkyl substituent), suitably by mixing the reactants in an inert diluent or solvent such as dimethylformamide, dimethyl sulphoxide or acetone.
