Abstract

649,789. Indicating breakage of knives of tobacco-cutting machines. MOLINS MACHINE CO., Ltd. Jan. 12, 1948, No. 888. [Class 37] A device for the detection of breakages in the knives of tobacco-cutting machines comprises two pairs, 5A, 5B and 5C, 5D, of inductors with gaps in their magnetic circuits past which the knives 3 sweep so that the whole of the leading edge of each knife is scanned. The inductors form a balanced bridge and are excited at 5000 cycles and are so designed and mounted that as a complete knife sweeps over a pair, the change in inductance is the same in each inductor and the bridge remains balanced, but if a knife is broken, the inductors are unequally affected and the output of the bridge after amplification and filtering to remove lowfrequency components operates a relay in the circuit of a thyratron to stop the machine. Each inductor may be tuned to the exciting frequency. The machine may be that described in Specification 588,129, [Group 1].
