[Class 37] [Also in Group XIX] The invention comprises an apparatus which produces a signal as a bank or other note containing a metal thread is fed through, the notes being moved past a responsive device in a direction transverse to the thread. As applied to apparatus for counting bank notes, these are fed past a detecting head containing an inductance coil forming one limb of a balanced bridge. A valve oscillator is connected across one diagonal of the bridge, the other diagonal comprising a resistance connected between the grid and cathode of an amplifying valve actuating a counter. Alternatively, the notes may be fed past an inductance arranged in a high-frequency oscillating circuit and thus cause pulses in the circuit. These pulses are indicated or recorded.
