Abstract

649,707. Sound transmitting and receiving devices. PHILIPS LAMPS, Ltd. Nov. 29, 1946, No. 35462. Convention date, Dec. 3, 1945. [Class 40 (iv)] An electrodynamic telephone instrument having an air cushion 7 between the diaphragm 2 and the magnetic system 6 has a central bore 11 in the central pole 4 of the magnet into which damping material 12 is fitted in such a manner as to create air passages 13 parallel to the bore 11 to couple the said air cushion 7 to the air chamber 14 acoustically, the number and size of the passages being such as to provide a resonance peak in the response curve towards the lower end of the audio frequency range adequately damped to extend the frequency characteristic curve towards the region of lowest frequency. A second chamber 10 is also coupled to the cushion 7 via an air gap 3 and gap 8 formed by a ring 9 of non-magnetic material to give the instrument a level characteristic over the whole speech band. Damping material of non-magnetic metal bars assembled as in Fig. 1a has been found to give satisfactory results and a coil of corrugated metal inserted axially in the bore is named as an alternative. A further embodiment, Fig. 4 (not shown), is of a pressure gradient instrument in which the ends of the passages remote from air cushion 7 are open to the atmosphere.
