Abstract
649,075. Drilling brush-stocks. CARLSON TOOL & MACHINE CO. Feb. 24, 1947, No. 11767. Convention date, June 5, 1940. Divided out of 649,024, [Group XXIII]. [Class 83 (iii)] [Also in Group XXIII] A brush-making machine includes three tables interconnected for common movement and adapted respectively to support a brushback blank to be drilled, a drilled brush-back to be tufted and a multiple-recessed master template adapted to co-operate with a holefinder mechanism having a tapered element adapted to successively engage the recesses in said template for accurately positioning said tables, said hole finder mechanism including a hole-finder rod reciprocably mounted in a stationary support and having a tapered template-engaging end portion, an actuating lever having a driving connection with said rod and having an end acted upon by a cam for positively moving said lever and thereby effecting the template-engaging stroke of said rod and means for retaining said lever in engagement with the cam and for effecting the return stroke of the rod. The driving connection between the rod and lever is preferably yieldable between predetermined limits to prevent injury to the machine should the tapered end of the rod fail to engage a recess in the template. As shown, the hole-finder rod 78 is reciprocably mounted in bearings 76 and 77 provided by a bracket 75 bolted to a cross-member 13 of the brush-making machine. The rod 78 is preferably tubular and carries an adjustably-secured tip 79. The rod is driven by a cam 80 on a shaft 24 through a lever 81 pivotally mounted on a bracket 82. The lever carries at one end a cam follower 83 and at the other end is bifurcated with pins engaging a collar 85 on a rod 78. A tension spring 86 maintains the cam follower in contact with the cam. To provide a yieldable connection between lever 81 and rod 78, the collar 85 is mounted for longitudinal movement on the rod by the provision of slots 88 in the rod through which a pin 89 of the collar projects, and within the rod is a compression spring 90 bearing against the pin 89 at one end and against a pin 91 secured to the rod at the other end. The hole-finder mechanism 22 is embodied in the general type of machine shown in Fig. 1, comprising tables 14, 15 and 16 adapted respectively to carry a blank. brush-back, a multiple-recessed template and a drilled brushback, the tables being mounted on suitable mechanism which moves the tables transversely and longitudinally of the machine in an intermittent step-by-step movement corresponding to the spacing of the tufting. The cross-member 13 of the machine carries a drillhead 18 which is reciprocated and the drill 19 carried thereby is continuously rotated to drill holes in the brush blank to a predetermined pattern. Above table 16 there operates tuftsupplying mechanism 20, staple-driving mechanism 21, staple wire feeding means and cutting-off means. The hole-finder mechanism operates in timed relationship with the reciprocation of the drill-head and staple driving mechanism to ensure that the interconnected tables 14, 15 and 16 are accurately positioned.
