[Class 38 (iv)] [Also in Groups VIII, XI and XL (b)] The system described in the parent Specification for supplying high-frequency energy in pulses to a scanning machine is modified in that the duration of each pulse is automatically increased or decreased as the thickness of the work increases or decreases respectively. The variable resistor in the pulse-timing circuit is mechanically linked to a vertically movable arm carrying a wheel which is spring-pressed on to the surface of the material; alternatively a photo-cell may act as a variable resistor in the timing circuit and be controlled by the position of the upper electrode when in contact with the material, a light beam to the cell being interrupted to a greater or lesser extent by a shutter mounted on a rod carrying the upper electrode.
