Abstract
648,597. Pyrotechnic signalling devices. SCHERMULY PISTOL ROCKET APPARATUS; Ltd. Dec. 10, 1948, No. 31960. [Class 9 (ii)] A signalling device has a casing 1 containing a smoke-producing composition 9 and to the rear of the casing is an apertured plate 2 held in position by a cannelure 3. The aperture is stepped to form a shoulder 6 against which abuts a flange on a tube 7 containing a pressed delay composition 8. This tube may be screwed into the plate and extends into the smoke-producing composition which is ignited by the delay. A flashtube 10 is screwed into the plate and is provided with one or more holes 11 providing communication between the flash passage and an explosive charge 17 between the plate 2 and a plug 14 closing the rear of the casing 1. When the device is fired from a breech-loaded discharger, this plug has a flange 15 which rests against the rear of the barrel. If the discharger is muzzle-loaded, the plug has an annular groove coacting with a catch in the barrel. A flash-producing cap 12 is held in the flash-tube by pins 13 so that on ignition, e.g. by a firing pin, the flash passes up the tube to ignite the delay 8 and through 'the holes 11 the charge 17 which ejects the device from the discharger, the plug 14 remaining in the barrel.
