Abstract

647,943. Control of D.C. motors. AMALGAMATED WIRELESS (AUSTRALASIA), Ltd. Feb. 6, 1946, No. 3800. Convention date, April 10, 1945. [Class 38(iii)] [Also in Group XXXVIII] In a system in which the reversible motor driving a directional aerial may be controlled, at will, to run continuously, or to operate under the control of an electric follow-up system involving interconnected potentiometers, or' to impart to the aerial a continuous scanning movement about the point selected by the followup system, it is arranged that the potentiometers are mechanically disconnected from the motor and the control handle respectively while the motor is set to run continuously. The electrical system therefore remains balanced in readiness for the switch-over to follow-up control. With the ganged switches S1, S2, S3, S4 in position III, an A.C. voltage, adjustable in amplitude and reversible in phase is derived at potentiometer 34 and is applied to a device 10 which preferably comprises a pair of grid-controlled rectifiers, arranged as described in Specification 647,580, and produces a reversible direct current in the field winding 14 of a Ward-Leonard generator feeding the aerial driving motor 5. With the switches in position II the input side of the device 10 is connected to the receiving potentiometer P2 of the follow-up system and the sliders of the potentiometers P1, P2 are clutched respectively to the control handle 50 and to a shaft coupled by an electrical synchronous control or otherwise to the driving motor. At the same time, the sending potentiometer is connected to the A.C. source in place of potentiometer 34. In position I of the switches, the motor remains under the control of the follow-up system but the output of the latter is supplemented by a voltage derived from a potentiometer 52 via reversing contacts of relay 55. Consequently the balance point is shifted to one side or the other of the point selected by the control handle. When the new balance point is reached, the reversing relay changes over and shifts the balance point to the other side of the manually selected point and this action is repeated. In a further embodiment, Fig. 2, not shown, the system is carried by a 'vehicle and the receiving potentiometer is controlled jointly by the driving motor and by a gyro to compensate for yawing movements of the vehicle.
