Abstract

Tubing is formed by extruding hot thermoplastic material through a die 1, supporting the tubing internally by fluid pressure, subjecting it to a preliminary drawing operation and then shaping the tubing by one or more sets of spaced plates 9, 10, each plate of each set exerting pressure against a portion only of the surface of the tubing and the plates together contacting the whole of the surface of the tubing. The first drawing operation may be carried out by a series of draw plates 3, 4, 5 or a single draw plate having a hole of tapering cross-section, (Figs. 2 and 11, not shown). The plates may be arranged in a container 6 of coolant, and a stream of coolant may be supplied to the outside of the tubing before entering the first draw plate. The tubing may be removed on a driven winding reel. The coolant in the container may be water, glycerine, hydrocarbon oils, gases or steam. The tubing may be drawn from circular to any polygonal section. The plates may be of such a shape as to produce tubing of clover leaf section, (Fig. 7, not shown). Specifications 602,321 and 606,880 are referred to. <PICT:0647479/IV (a)/1> <PICT:0647479/IV (a)/2> The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 states that the set of one or more spaced plates may be replaced by a plate 26, Fig. 2 (Cancelled), inclined to the line of travel of the tubing. This plate may draw the tubing to square or circular section. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
