Abstract

647,298. Fuel; quenching coke. UNITED STEEL COS., Ltd., and REEVE, L. May 7, 1948, No. 12611. [Classes 50 and 51(ii)] A method of reducing the sulphur content of coke comprises treating the coke at a temperature of at least 800‹C with a hydrocarbon-containing gas which is rich in hydrogen, e.g. coke-oven gas and which has previously been treated to reduce its hydrocarbon content to a level which permits effective desulphurizing to take place. The preliminary treatment of the cokeoven gas is by passing it through red hot coke. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, a stock of treated coke-oven gas is obtained and circulated through the coke under treatment, small additional quantities of uncracked coke-oven gas being added to the circulated gas to maintain its hydrogen content. The process is preferably combined with the dry quenching of the coke in a system which includes means for recovering waste heat and for removing hydrogen sulphate from the circulating gases. Catalysts such as sodium carbonate may be added to the coke to promote the de-sulphurizing action and the presence of water vapour in the treating gas is also beneficial. In an example, after five hours of treatment the sulphur content of a coke was reduced by 0.23 per cent.
