Abstract
647,293. Generating combustion products under pressure. AKT.-GES. BROWN, BOVERI, & CIE. April 29, 1948, No. 11774. Convention date, May 12, 1947. [Class 51(i)] A combustion chamber 8 for a gas turbine plant is provided with a flame tube consisting of a casing 7 from which are freely suspended a plurality of interchangeable ribbed elements the inner surfaces 10 of which are contacted by the flames. The ribs and the casing 7 are cooled by the secondary air flow. Attached to the ribs 11 are lugs 12 which engage openings 13 in the casing 7, the latter consisting of a number of sheet metal cylinders graded in diameter and suspended from starshaped holders 16. A radial clearance between the cylinder and holders allows for radial expansion. The spaces between the ribs 11 allows the cooling air to flow from the space 6 into the inside of the combustion chamber. In a modification, Fig. 3, the combustion chamber wall is formed of a number of conical overlapping sleeves 17 mutually supported by means of lugs 18. The bottom ring rests oh a bracket 19 fixed to the outer casing 8. The ribbed elements 20 in this case are trapezoidal in shape. In this construction the individual parts for all the combustion chamber sections are the same size. In another modification the ribbed elements consist of a straight part forming the combustion chamber wall and an inclined part which forms annular inlets for the cooling air. In this arrangement the ribbed elements are hooked on to supporting rings. In a further modification the casing 7 is formed as a cylinder and encloses a number of annular ribbed elements which are axially spaced along the casing leaving annular slots between them. Holes are formed in the casing 7 to allow cooling air to flow into the casing, over the ribs of the ribbed elements and through the annular slots into the combustion chamber. The ribbed elements may be flat or curved to fit the combustion chamber. To avoid distortion of the elements due to differences of temperature on opposite sides, the ribs may be divided along their length. The area of the cooling air passages between the ribs may be varied so as to accelerate the air flow as the air gets hotter. This maintains the wall temperature of the ribbed element constant. The ribbed elements may be made of chrome steel. These ribs may be machined in the element or bent up out of sheet metal. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also a construction of ribbed element consisting of thick chrome steel on the flame side, thin sheet metal bent in the form of ribs on the cooling air side, the enclosed space being filled with cast copper. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
