[Class 99(i)] In a well drilling hydraulic rotary swivel comprising a connection for the supply of drilling liquid from a stationary source into a washpipe 10 and thence through a rotary spindle 4 to a rotary drill pipe, the washpipe is rotatably connected to the spindle 4 and is encircled by a stationary member 7 with one or more annular resilient packing rings 25, 26, 27 each having a lateral extending lip portion 39 and a substantially axial extending rim portion 38, therebetween and means which are associated with the member 7 compresses the rim portions to secure the rings to the member 7 whilst the lip portions contact the member 10 to form a rotary seal between said members 7, 10. As shown, the washpipe 10 is secured to the spindle 4 by a collar 13 which has a flange 11 and a plurality of screws 22 adapted to bear on opposite sides of a ledge 14 which is integral with the washpipe. Spacers 28, 29, 30, 31 are disposed between the sealing rings; the bottom spacer 28 resting on a nut 35 which is threaded on the member 7 to effect contraction of the sealing rings. The spacers are formed with a wall 40, Fig. 3, to encircle the rim 38 and a trough 41 to receive the sealing ring, whilst its under surface 42 is shaped as shown to facilitate wedging of the ring between the surfaces 41, 42. A grease nipple 32 extends through the spacer 29 and the member 7. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), a skirt integral with the member 7 extends within the washpipe thereby providing an additional grease chamber between said members. In another modification, Fig. 5, a housing 16a for the rings is bolted to the member 7 and a spacer 31a disposed therein has an inwardly extending flange 51 and a depending annular skirt 52 which extends within the washpipe 10a to form a grease chamber 53 in communication with the grease chamber 56 between the washpipe and the spacer.
