Abstract

In the preparation of detergents, a shale oil fraction boiling within the range 270 DEG to 360 DEG C. is reacted with sulphuric acid and neutralized with a metal base to produce metal alkyl sulphates of low solubility in water. The sulphonation is preferably effected with sulphuric acid of 96-100 per cent strength, in amount from 10-20 per cent, preferably 12-13 per cent by volume of the feed oil, and at a temperature below 20 DEG C., preferably 5-20 DEG C. The alkyl sulphates are separated from the acid sludge and run into excess of metal hydroxide or carbonate solution, e.g. sodium carbonate. The resulting emulsion is refluxed for say 5 hours at 95 DEG C. and extracted with, for example, isopropyl alcohol to separate the more volatile unreacted oils. The separated alcoholic detergent solution is then evaporated to a thin paste containing about 12.5 per cent of sodium alkyl sulphate calculated as C20 H41SO3ONa.ALSO:A detergent composition is prepared by reacting a shale oil distillation fraction boiling within the range 270 DEG to 360 DEG C. with sulphuric acid, neutralizing with a metal base to produce metal alkyl sulphates of low solubility in water, and mixing with a filler such as kieselguhr. The sulphonation is preferably effected with sulphuric acid of 96-100 per cent strength, in amount from 10-20 per cent, preferably 12-13 per cent, by volume of the feed oil, and at a temperature below 20 DEG C., preferably 5-20 DEG C. The alkyl sulphates are separated from the acid sludge and run into excess of metal hydroxide or carbonate solution, e.g. sodium carbonate. The resulting emulsion is refluxed for, say, 5 hours at 95 DEG C., and extracted with, for example, isopropyl alcohol, to separate the more volatile unreacted oils. The separated alcoholic detergent solution is evaporated to a thin paste containing about 12.5 per cent of sodium alkyl sulphate calculated as C20H41SO3ONa, which is mixed with a binding agent such as bentonite and a filler such as kieselguhr to form a detergent paste suitable, for example, for cleaning the hands of mineral lubricating oils and sludges, dirt containing weak acids or metallic salts such as zinc chloride, or for cleaning painted surfaces. Mineral oils such as spindle oil, antiseptics, deodorants, and colouring matter may be added.
