[Class 141] A method of corrugating materials such as paper so that the forming of the folds does not damage or weaken the material, comprises feeding a sheet of the material between the nip of two interacting smooth. cylindrical rollers having equal peripheral speeds which advance it into a channel limited in its least dimension by adjustably mounted parallel walls, and which has temporary obstruction placed across it at the beginning of a corrugating operation, so that the first part of the material crowds up against the obstruction to form a thickening sufficient to offer, with the walls of the channel, a frictional resistance large enough to ensure the continuous corrugation of the material when the obstruction is removed. A machine for carrying out this method comprises a channel formed between two superposed layers of spaced bars 4 mounted edgewise on rods 10 which are secured for vertical adjustment on uprights 13, 14. The ends 3 of the bars 4 extend into corresponding grooves 2 formed in rollers 1 rotatably mounted for equal peripheral speeds in bearings 6, 7 and urged together by springs 9 to convey a sheet of material 15 into the channel. Part of the channel may be formed of heating plates which may be solid or of open construction and which have grooves formed in one end to receive the ends of shortened bars which may also be heated. The channel may alternatively be formed completely of heating plates, or by cloths or felt stretched over driving rollers.
