[Classes 29 and 64(ii)] [Also in Groups VI and XXXII] In a portable storage chamber 10 cooled by relatively wide, flat channels 13, 14 disposed vertically around the walls, outside air enters by a port 20 and is forced by a fan 21 through trunking 22 in heat exchange with the coolers 13, 14 to a brine bath 30 through which it is bubbled to humidify it before being projected into the chamber by fans 33. The channels 13 contain an eutectic brine which is initially frozen by refrigerant circulated in the channels 14 which are then evacuated. The ventilating air may be humidified before being cooled. Condensed watervapour is withdrawn by pipes 50. A pressure relief valve 41 is provided. The humidity is determined by the concentration of brine in the bath 30. For storing and ageing of meat, the temperature may be maintained at 40‹ F., the relative humidity at not less than 92 per cent and the rate of air circulation at between 40 and 60 feet per minute. If vegetable articles are being stored a small percentage of carbon dioxide may be introduced. In very cold climates, heating fluid may be circulated initially in the channels 14. Non-conducting coverings. - The walls comprise an insulated layer 11 of rock wool, spun glass, or foam rubber and a layer 15 of dry air or carbon dioxide.
