523,779. Preserving food. SEABROOK, J. A. E. Dec. 15, 1938, No. 36582. [Class 49] [Also in Group XIII] The atmosphere in an air lock or defrosting chamber adjacent a cold storage tank is dried by cooling before being heated to defrosting temperature. A chamber or tank 1 in which eggs or other foodstuffs are stored at a low temperature is maintained at a desired humidity by circulating the contained air or gas through a conduit 15, drier 17 containing a desiccant such as calcium chloride, a pump 16 and conduit 14, the pump motor 18 being controlled by a humidostat 19. The apparatus shown is similar to that described in Specification 484,668 and in which air is circulated by a fan 5 over a cooler 4 in ducts 3 between the chamber 1 and an outer casing 2. A defrosting chamber 8 is arranged at the end of the casing 2 and when goods are to be removed from the storage chamber 1 a fan 10 in the defrosting chamber is started to circulate the air from the chamber 1 and from the ducts 3 through the chamber 8. This air flows through ducts 11, 12 and past the cooler 4, and is thereby dried so as to avoid deposition of moisture on the goods withdrawn from store; An electric heater 13 at the end of duct 12 supplies the defrosting heat. The air or gas of the storage tank may be dried by passage over cold surfaces instead of by absorption of moisture.
