Abstract

Boron fluoride complexes of formula RxBF3, are prepared by exposing an organic substance R to direct contact with gaseous boron fluoride. R may be selected from the natural fats, fatty acids, fatty acid esters of monohydric and polyhydric alcohols, unmodified alcohols containing at least 3 carbon atoms, alcohol-ethers, ethers, aliphatic, aromatic and heterocyclic mono- and polyamines, amine-alcohols and amides, and x may be 1 or more. Fats mentioned are tallow, lard oil, lanolin, sperm oil, peanut oil, cottonseed oil, palm oil, fish oil, coconut oil, castor oil, and menhaden fish oil. Fatty acids specified are oleic acid, lauric acid, stearic acid, ricinoleic acid, caproic acid and linoleic acid. Esters mentioned are butyl laurate and stearate, methyl oleate, cyclohexyl stearate, butyl acetyl ricinoleate, glyceryl laurate, diglycol stearate and nonaethylene glycol monostearate. Alcohols and ethers which may be used are octyl and cetyl alcohols, tetradecanol, polyethylene glycol, methyl, diethyl and phenyl "Cellosolve" (Registered Trade Mark), diethyl carbitol and n-hexyl ether. Amines and amides mentioned are octylamine, tetraethylene pentamine, monoisopropanol amine, ethyl phenyl di-isopropanol amine, tri-isopropanol amine, 2-amino-2-methyl-1,3-propanediol, quinoline, pyridine, morpholine, acetamide, stearamide and urea.ALSO:A lubricating composition comprises a major proportion of p hydrocarbon oil and a minor proportion of a boron fluoride complex of formula RxBF3, where R is one of the natural fats, fatty acids, fatty acid esters of monohydric alcohols and polyhydric alcohols, unmodified alcohols containing at least 3 carbon atoms, alcohol-ethers, ethers, aliphatic, aromatic and heterocyclic mono- and poly-amines, amine-alcohols and amides, and x may be 1 or greater. The hydrocarbon oil may be of natural or synthetic origin. Fats mentioned are tallow, lard oil, lanolin, sperm oil, peanut oil, cotton seed oil, palm oil, fish oil, coconut oil, castor oil, and menhaden fish oil. Fatty acids specified are oleic acid, lauric acid, stearic acid, ricinoleic acid, caproic acid and linoleic acid. Lists of esters, alcohols, alcohol-ethers, ethers, amines, amine-alcohols and amides which may be used are also given. From 0.5 to 5 per cent by weight of the complex is preferably used. Additives, such as extreme pressure additives composed of chlorine, sulphur- or lead-containing compounds may also be added.
