Abstract

644,835. Shearing. CONTINENTAL CAN CO., Inc. March 30, 1948, No. 9028. Convention date, July 11, 1947. [Class 83 (iv)] In a machine for cutting scroll-ended sheets from strip 'metal, e.g. for making can bodies, a gauging stop G is spaced at a predetermined distance from scroll shear means F, and means B, D is provided for feeding the strip through the shear means to the stop G where it is gauged both laterally and longitudinally, and for operating the shears to cut a length off the strip, the gauging-strip G being moved into one position for engaging the strip and out of position for the strip to pass it. Straightening.-Strip S is fed from a coil A by a rollerleveller unit B where it is straightened before passing to a hump forming unit D controlling, according to the method of Specification 644,834, the speed of the electric motor 14 belt driving the rolls 6 of the unit B to keep the hump height within predetermined limits. Metal-strip feeds.-The strip S just before and during shearing is held against a table 22 by a bar downwardly sprung and raised by a cam-operated tappet 81 when an idle roll 68 is momentarily released by the common cam 60 to press the strip S against a roll 83 continuously driven by a motor 87 to initiate the gravity feed of the strip S from the hump. Shear-blades.-The lower fixed shear blade 32 is shaped to produce a scroll cut 34, and cooperates with an upper blade 31, mounted on a carrier 30 counter balanced by adjustable springs 53 and operated by pitmen 57 from an eccentric-carrying shaft 36 driven from the motor 14. Stroke-adjustments.-The stroke position is adjustable in operation by a capstan 44 gear driving screws 47 to vary the lengths of the pitmen 57. Work-guides.-The strip S is laterally guided near the shears F by an eccentric curved blade 166 moved, against a spring 174 by a wedge cam 173 on the carrier 30, to close the strips against a fixed blade 165. Framings.-A unit 89 is mounted on wheels 90 for removal from the main frame 25 which is cut away at one part 138 to receive an endless belt 116, and is located by dowels 94 and held by bolts 95. A main shaft 98 is split, one part being mounted in the frame 89 and connected by a disc 104 and locking pin (Fig. 13, not shown) to a similar shaft mounted in the main frame 25 and gear-connected to the shaft 36. Gauging-stops.-A set of stops 148 shaped to engage the scrolls in the sheet end and thus gauge it in two dimensions is mounted on a bar 144 vertically moved in guideways of blocks 150 by a bar 139 reciprocated through bell-cranks 130 from a pair of double cams 133. The block 150 is reciprocated laterally to take up the shock due to the impact of the moving strips S by a rod 151, crank-operated from a further cam 160, and is finally stopped by a screw 80 and stop 181. Transferring blanks; strippers.-A set of rails 125 beneath fixed top rails 122 and adjacent side rails 124 support the sheet during shearing and are mounted on the bar 139 so that when the stops 148 descend, the sheet engages belts 116 driven from an electric motor 188 to feed the cut-off sheets to pinch rolls 182 feeding on to a further conveyer belt H. A spring plate 35 on the carrier 30 strips the strip S from the upper blade 32 and fixed bars 156 strip the cut sheet from the stops 148 as they descend. Operation. The hold down bar is raised and the idle roll 68 lowered to start the strip feed from the hump. The rolls 6 feed the strip S, the final short distance when the stops 148 are up and moving laterally. The bar is lowered and the strip is gauged endways and widthwise by the stops 148 and laterally near the shears by the blades 165, 166 as the shear descends. After shearing the stops 148 and rails 125 are lowered and the sheet is stripped and fed forward by the belts 116. U.S.A. Specifications 2,078,196 and 2,266,687 are referred to. Specification 644,834 also is referred to.
